Android 17 starts hitting Pixel phones and watches today

The much-anticipated Android 17 is officially rolling out today, following an extensive testing phase that began earlier this year. The final beta version was released just weeks ago, marking a significant milestone in the evolution of the Android operating system. This rollout is particularly noteworthy for Pixel phone users, as it introduces a variety of new features while laying the groundwork for future enhancements. Coinciding with this launch is a Pixel Drop and an updated version of Wear OS, which is also based on Android 17 and will be available on Pixel Watches. Google has moved away from offering a standard version of Android on its devices. Instead, the Pixel build incorporates several unique features that set it apart from the standard Android 17 release. Other manufacturers may eventually adopt some of these features, but currently, Pixel phones are the exclusive recipients of this update. Among the standout features in Android 17 is the enhanced multitasking system known as Bubbles. This system builds upon a messaging feature that had not fully realized its potential in previous iterations. With Android 17, users can long-press any app icon to open that app in a floating window. These bubbles remain on top of other apps, making multitasking seamless. For users with foldable phones, the bubbles will conveniently dock into a 'bubble bar' for easier access. Google emphasizes that this new interface is designed for quick multitasking, allowing users to engage with apps like Gemini while still accessing other content. While Bubbles is a fresh addition for Android 17, it’s worth noting that similar floating app functionalities have been available on Samsung devices for years. Motorola, which tends to implement fewer changes to the Android experience, may find this feature particularly beneficial as it continues to roll out Android 17 more broadly.
