Following some initial confusion, Android 17 has officially arrived in beta form for compatible Pixel devices. After a previous release attempt was scrapped without explanation from Google, users can now experience the latest updates, although significant changes are still on the horizon. This initial beta version primarily focuses on testing system and API modifications rather than delivering a host of new features. One of the standout aspects of this release is the enhanced support for adaptive applications, which enables apps to effectively adjust to various screen dimensions. This improvement is particularly beneficial for larger devices such as tablets and foldable phones. Unlike prior versions, developers are now required to ensure their apps can accommodate resizing and windowed multitasking when targeting Android 17, also referred to as API level 37. While apps can still be developed for earlier API levels for now, Google will gradually filter out those that fail to adhere to the new standards from the Play Store. Additionally, the beta introduces enhancements in media and camera functionalities. The revamped API facilitates smoother transitions between camera sensors, eliminating the need to initiate new activities each time. Moreover, Android 17 boasts professional-level support for the Versatile Video Coding (VVC) standard, which promises improved video encoding and decoding efficiency. Google has also implemented performance optimizations, including a new generational garbage collection system that aims to streamline resource management by more frequently and efficiently clearing out unnecessary processes from memory.
