In a recent post on his Substack, Yang suggested that the increasing use of automation will push many mid-career professionals, middle managers, call center employees, marketers, and even coders out of their jobs, transforming workplaces across the nation. Yang emphasized the competitive nature of corporate layoffs, stating that once one company begins to reduce its workforce, others will likely follow suit. This trend, he argues, is fueled by stock market pressures that reward companies for cutting costs, including headcount. "It will become a competition because the stock market will reward you if you cut headcount and punish you if you don't," he noted. This prediction aligns with earlier warnings Yang has made about the disruptive potential of automation. He previously highlighted the risk posed by self-driving vehicles to truck drivers, suggesting such changes could lead to societal unrest. In his latest analysis, he urged workers who spend significant time at desks to take his warnings seriously. The trend toward layoffs is already evident, with January 2023 recording the highest number of job cuts for that month since 2009. For instance, Pinterest announced plans to downsize 15% of its workforce as part of its "AI-forward strategy," and HP indicated it would eliminate up to 6,000 positions by 2028 due to AI initiatives.
