The impact of AI on the job market is becoming increasingly evident, with layoffs already affecting many workers in the United States. Former presidential candidate Andrew Yang expressed serious concerns during a recent appearance on The New York Times' "Hard Fork" podcast. He warned that the combination of AI technology and the current economic landscape could create an "epic, unprecedented scale" of inequality. Yang emphasized that the wealth gap is likely to expand dramatically, predicting that the wealthiest individuals could amass unprecedented fortunes. He stated, "We're going to have our first trillionaire. The elite in American society will continue to grow richer, while many families will be left in confusion and despair. My kids studied hard, but there are no jobs available, they carry student loans, and they're stuck at home feeling hopeless." To counteract these potential issues, Yang advocates for a universal basic income (UBI), which would provide regular, unconditional payments to all citizens. This idea was central to Yang's campaign in 2020, where he proposed the Freedom Dividend, a plan that would have granted every American adult $1,000 monthly. However, the proposal faced significant opposition, notably from Democratic Senator Bernie Sanders, who argued for guaranteed federal jobs as a solution to automation-related job losses. The debate around UBI remains polarized among lawmakers. Supporters argue it could enhance economic stability, while critics fear it might disincentivize work and be challenging to finance. Some influential figures in the tech industry, including Tesla's Elon Musk, have endorsed UBI as a means to address the employment challenges posed by AI. Musk recently remarked that a "universal high income" could be the optimal solution for the impending wave of AI-driven job displacement, asserting that AI and robotics will generate goods and services at a pace that exceeds monetary inflation. Furthermore, Yang proposed implementing a tax on AI technologies to help mitigate the income disparity in the U.S. economy. He stated, "We should focus on taxing AI rather than human labor. The funds generated from this tax should benefit people and workers in various ways. It's essential to rethink our approach to taxation in light of these technological advancements."
