Andrew Yang thinks the next big startup opportunity is lowering the cost of living

Former presidential candidate and entrepreneur Andrew Yang is exploring innovative startup opportunities aimed at reducing the cost of living. He poses a provocative question that many entrepreneurs overlook: what if businesses prioritized giving back to customers instead of only profiting from them? Yang's perspective was partly inspired by Mark Cuban's venture, Cost Plus Drugs, which sells pharmaceuticals at cost. Drawing from this concept, Yang identified key areas where expenses are significant, including housing, education, food, transportation, and media. Last September, he launched Nobile Mobile, a mobile virtual network operator that offers affordable cell service and rewards customers with cash back for using less data. As AI technology continues to disrupt the job market and compress wages, Yang perceives a substantial business opportunity in addressing everyday living costs. He references several emerging companies like Cost Plus Drugs, Noble Mobile, and Misfits Markets as exemplars of a new category of startups that return value to their consumers. Yang argues that as AI takes over jobs, individuals will seek solutions for meeting their basic needs more affordably. Yang, known for advocating Universal Basic Income (UBI) during his 2020 presidential bid, believes that the wealth generated by AI should be redistributed to benefit average Americans. While he acknowledges uncertainty about whether the government will effectively manage this redistribution, he sees potential for market solutions to fill the gap. Noble Mobile has witnessed rapid growth since its inception, attracting thousands of customers and generating millions in revenue. Yang emphasizes the importance of sharing profits with subscribers to foster loyalty and word-of-mouth referrals. He highlights that an average monthly savings of $50, if invested over 40 years, could result in a retirement fund of approximately $24,000, a compelling incentive for consumers in today's economic climate. Despite the potential, Yang recognizes that attracting investment can be challenging, especially with a current focus on AI. He recalls an investor suggesting that if Noble Mobile could pivot to an AI model, they would be more inclined to invest. However, Yang believes that even major corporations recognize the need for a consumer base with adequate purchasing power. Yang encourages entrepreneurs and investors to pursue their passions and tackle pressing societal issues, advocating for a broader vision that transcends conventional thinking. He believes that by addressing genuine problems, founders can create valuable enterprises that benefit both consumers and themselves.
