Google Brain founder Andrew Ng says everyone should still learn to code — but not the 'old way'

Andrew Ng, a prominent figure in the tech world and the founder of Google Brain, has emphasized the importance of coding in today's digital landscape. Speaking at Snowflake's recent 'Build' conference, Ng highlighted that the barriers to learning coding have significantly lowered, making it accessible to a broader audience. He stated, "People in various roles, including CEOs, marketers, and recruiters, can accomplish more if they learn to code, not just software engineers." Ng, who is also a Stanford professor and leads several AI-driven ventures, expressed that now is an excellent time for individuals to pursue their passions, as advancements in technology allow for quicker and more cost-effective project development. However, he urged against traditional coding methods, advocating instead for what he calls "vibe coding," which leverages AI to facilitate the coding process. "Don't code by hand; get AI to assist you," Ng advised, asserting that this approach can enhance productivity and enjoyment across all professions. He also pointed out a concerning trend in the job market, noting that computer science graduates are facing increased unemployment rates due to universities lagging in updating their curricula to incorporate AI coding techniques. "Even I experience difficulty in hiring enough individuals with solid AI expertise," Ng remarked. This sentiment resonates with other leaders in the tech industry. Last month, Jensen Huang, CEO of Nvidia, mentioned several vibe coding startups that are poised to reshape the workforce, emphasizing a hybrid model of human and digital collaboration. He noted that future enterprises will rely on combinations of human intelligence and AI solutions. Klarna’s CEO, Sebastian Siemiatkowski, also shared his experiences on a podcast, explaining how AI coding tools like Cursor have allowed him to create prototypes more efficiently, bypassing the need to constantly consult his engineering team. In recent months, the demand for vibe coding skills has surged, as evidenced by job postings from major companies such as Visa, Reddit, and DoorDash, which now specifically seek applicants familiar with AI code generators. This growing trend suggests that proficiency in AI-assisted coding is becoming an essential asset in the modern job market.
