Andrej Karpathy says he feels 'nervous' when he doesn't use up his AI token budget

In a recent episode of the "No Priors" podcast, Andrej Karpathy, the former AI director at Tesla and co-founder of OpenAI, revealed a new approach to his AI usage. He expressed a desire to fully utilize his AI token budget, stating, "I feel nervous when I have subscription left over." This sentiment reflects a broader trend among developers as they reassess their strategies for engaging with AI technologies. Karpathy explained that his focus has shifted from the speed of coding to the effective deployment of tokens. In the AI ecosystem, tokens serve as a currency for accessing model capabilities, with each token representing a small unit of data—typically, four characters equate to one token. For both consumers and professionals, the ability to maximize token usage can significantly enhance AI performance. He emphasized the need to optimize subscriptions, noting that he may switch between different AI products as his token limits approach. "If you're running out of quota on Codex, you should switch to Claude," he advised, indicating a strategic approach to resource management. This perspective aligns with comments made by Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, who recently shared on the "All-In" podcast that employees earning substantial salaries are expected to utilize a significant portion of tokens. Huang remarked, "How many tokens comes along with my job?" highlighting the increasing importance of token allocation in the competitive landscape of Silicon Valley. Furthermore, Box CEO Aaron Levie echoed these thoughts, predicting that the rise in AI token expenditures will soon impact the broader realm of knowledge work. Karpathy's reflections illustrate a pivotal change in how developers and organizations perceive their AI resources, suggesting that the paradigm is shifting from concerns over computational power to token management. He likened this evolution to his experiences as a Ph.D. student, stating, "Now, it's not about flops — it's about tokens."
