Andreessen Horowitz denies report of India office, calls it ‘fake news’

The prominent venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz (a16z) has officially refuted recent media claims about its plans to establish an office in India. Anish Acharya, a general partner at a16z based in the Bay Area, labeled the reports as 'entirely fake news' in a post on social media platform X. Earlier reports from Indian news sources had suggested that a16z was preparing to set up a physical location in Bengaluru and was in the process of hiring a local partner. However, Acharya dismissed these assertions, stating his admiration for India and its thriving entrepreneurial ecosystem but firmly denying any intentions to open an office there. A spokesperson for a16z corroborated Acharya's comments, emphasizing the dismissal of the news as unfounded. This denial comes amid a broader trend where a16z appears to be reassessing its international strategies, having recently closed its London office just 18 months after its inception. This decision followed a shift in focus towards more favorable regulatory conditions in the U.S. Despite these developments, a16z has expressed its commitment to investing internationally through remote teams and local partnerships. However, it has yet to make significant inroads in the Indian market, a space actively pursued by other U.S.-based venture firms like Accel and Lightspeed Venture Partners. The firm's most notable investment in India remains its backing of the crypto exchange CoinSwitch during a $260 million funding round in 2021, with further investments in Indian startups yet to materialize. As co-founder Marc Andreessen previously noted, while emerging markets present enticing opportunities, the complexities of venture capital in diverse locales pose substantial challenges for firms looking to expand globally.
