Andhra Pradesh launches Amaravati Quantum Valley in push to become global quantum hub

On February 7, Andhra Pradesh marked a significant milestone by launching the Amaravati Quantum Valley, an ambitious integrated hub dedicated to quantum technology. This initiative is part of India's broader strategy to enhance its capabilities in next-generation computing through the National Quantum Mission. During the inauguration ceremony held in Amaravati, Chief Minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu emphasized the state's intent to not only participate in the global quantum landscape but to lead it. "Andhra Pradesh will not follow; we will lead. When the world seeks quantum solutions, Amaravati will be the go-to destination. Here, we will create 'Quantum for the World,'" Naidu declared passionately. The Amaravati Quantum Valley (AQV) is poised to be India's first fully integrated quantum ecosystem, designed to encompass quantum computing hardware, software development, algorithm design, and workforce training all within one campus. This comprehensive approach aims to position Amaravati as a pivotal center for quantum research and innovation. Among its notable features, AQV plans to host an IBM Quantum System Two, pending regulatory approvals from the U.S. government. This would be the most advanced IBM quantum computer operational in India, significantly bolstering the region's technological profile. The project boasts collaboration with over 50 partners, including industry giants like IBM, Tata Consultancy Services, and Larsen & Toubro, as well as esteemed Indian Institutes of Technology and emerging quantum startups. The goal is to elevate Andhra Pradesh to the ranks of the world’s top five quantum hubs. Union Minister of State for Science and Technology, Jitendra Singh, expressed strong support for the initiative, linking it to India’s ambitious Rs 6,000-crore National Quantum Mission. He remarked, "The Department of Science & Technology is fully committed to supporting Andhra Pradesh. AQV embodies the bold, integrated strategy needed for India to emerge as a global quantum superpower, contributing to the vision of Viksit Bharat 2047." As part of this launch, TCS and IBM revealed plans to make IBM's quantum computing resources accessible via cloud services throughout India. This initiative will empower researchers and businesses to execute quantum algorithms remotely, expanding access to cutting-edge technology. Sandip Patel, Managing Director of IBM India and South Asia, anticipates significant advancements in quantum computing capabilities for Indian researchers and enterprises through this collaboration.
