“We have created history”: Andhra Pradesh CM Chandrababu Naidu on Amaravati quantum test bed launch

On April 14, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu inaugurated two pioneering quantum computer test beds in Amaravati, marking a significant milestone for the state in the realm of quantum technology. These state-of-the-art facilities, located at SRM University in Amaravati and Medha Towers in Gannavaram, are integral to the Amaravati Quantum Valley initiative, aimed at establishing a foundation for quantum infrastructure in India. During the launch, Chief Minister Naidu expressed pride in this achievement, highlighting its occurrence on World Quantum Day, which coincides with the centenary celebration of Quantum Science. He stated that the newly launched 1S and 1Q quantum test beds are set to be instrumental in the evaluation and certification of quantum devices. “This Telugu land, which has already made significant contributions to the IT sector, is now emerging as a vital hub for quantum technologies,” he remarked. The two test beds serve distinct purposes. The 1Q test bed, developed by QBit Force at Medha Towers, is designed for the testing and measurement of quantum components. Meanwhile, the 1S system at SRM University utilizes superconducting technology and operates at temperatures nearing absolute zero, approximately -273°C. Both systems are engineered for flexibility, allowing for the easy removal and replacement of parts to facilitate the testing of new components. A noteworthy aspect of the SRM University facility is its accessibility; it will be open to researchers, students, startups, and companies, offering them the unique opportunity to engage directly with the quantum machines. This openness contrasts with many conventional quantum labs, which are typically closed off to external users. According to CV Sridhar, director of the Andhra Pradesh State Quantum Mission, the systems have been constructed with components developed domestically, benefiting from collaborations with esteemed institutions such as the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, the Indian Institute of Science, and the Defence Research and Development Organisation. The state government envisions this project as a foundation for a broader ecosystem encompassing research, startups, and industry advancements.
