Age checks for social media? Nara Lokesh says talks are underway with Ashwini Vaishnaw

As India enhances its ambitions in artificial intelligence and digital technology, there is a growing emphasis on cybersecurity and the protection of minors online. Recently, numerous global authorities have introduced stricter data privacy regulations impacting businesses and social media platforms, particularly concerning children. In this context, the Andhra Pradesh government is actively considering measures for implementing 'age-appropriate access to social media,' as revealed by state IT minister Nara Lokesh. During the foundation-laying ceremony for the Google AI data center in Vizag, Lokesh shared with Business Today that the state is collaborating closely with Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw to develop a comprehensive policy focused on data privacy. "We are striving to establish the necessary safeguards to protect the data privacy of Indian citizens," Lokesh emphasized. Previously, there have been indications that the Andhra Pradesh government is looking into creating an age-gated digital environment utilizing DigiLocker for age verification, aimed at preventing underage individuals from accessing social media platforms. Additionally, Lokesh is evaluating proposals for imposing restrictions on social media usage by teenagers. Highlighting the dual priorities of national security and child safety, Lokesh stated, "From ensuring sovereignty to facilitating age-appropriate access to social media, we are committed to building a robust digital and AI ecosystem in India and Andhra Pradesh." As the Google AI data center starts operations in Vizag, there is also a significant focus on localization and digital security measures. Lokesh described this initiative as "India’s single largest FDI after Independence," marking a significant milestone for the country. Vaishnaw echoed this sentiment, referring to the project as a 'Cybrabad moment' for Visakhapatnam, which he has dubbed AI-Patnam. With the establishment of this AI hub, India aims to position itself as a secure and reliable environment for data and AI systems, all while prioritizing the balance between technological advancement and data privacy.
