Ancient Egyptians likely used opiates regularly

Recent discoveries have unveiled evidence of opiate use among the ancient Egyptians, with traces found in the residue of an alabaster vase. This finding suggests that the consumption of opiates was not a mere indulgence but rather an integral part of their daily lives. A study published in the Journal of Eastern Mediterranean Archaeology highlights this connection, emphasizing how archaeologists have increasingly applied pharmacological techniques to analyze artifacts from various cultures. Throughout history, many civilizations, including the Egyptians, Greeks, Vedic, Maya, Inca, and Aztec, have employed hallucinogenic substances in their spiritual practices. For example, the Urarina people in the Peruvian Amazon continue to use a psychoactive brew called ayahuasca in their rituals. This tradition echoes through time as Western seekers also turn to these ancient practices for enlightenment. Notably, in 2023, David Tanasi from the University of South Florida shared preliminary findings from a ceremonial mug adorned with Bes, a deity associated with protection. Tanasi's analysis involved advanced methods, such as proteomic and genetic studies, alongside synchrotron radiation-based infrared spectroscopy, to identify residue components. His research uncovered remnants of Syrian rue, known for its hallucinogenic effects, along with blue water lily, a sedative. The study also revealed a complex fermented brew containing yeasts, grains, fruits, honey, and possibly human fluids, hinting at the multifaceted nature of ancient Egyptian rituals. A subsequent study in 2024 corroborated these findings, discovering additional elements like pine nuts, licorice, and medicinal spider flowers, underscoring the sophisticated understanding of substances among the ancient Egyptians and their elaborate ceremonial practices.
