Pompeii victim ID’d as a likely doctor

Archaeologists have made a remarkable discovery regarding one of the victims from the catastrophic eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 CE, identifying him as a likely Roman physician. This revelation comes through the innovative use of advanced CT scanning and 3D digital reconstruction techniques, as announced by the Pompeii Archaeological Park. The eruption of Vesuvius unleashed an astonishing amount of thermal energy, estimated to be 100,000 times that of the atomic bombs detonated in Hiroshima and Nagasaki. This volcanic event devastated the cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum, with the overwhelming majority of casualties succumbing to asphyxiation from the thick clouds of ash and toxic gases. Many individuals likely perished instantly due to the intense heat of the rapidly flowing lava, capable of reaching temperatures sufficient to boil brains and shatter skulls. In the 19th century, archaeologist Giuseppe Fiorelli pioneered the technique of creating casts of the victims by pouring liquid plaster into voids left by decayed bodies. To date, around 1,000 bodies have been unearthed from the ruins, with 104 plaster casts preserved for study. Over the past decade, restoration efforts have focused on 86 of these casts, utilizing CT scans and X-rays to investigate the skeletal remains within. The imaging techniques revealed significant alterations in some casts, reflecting the aesthetic preferences of different historical periods. Adjustments included modifying body shapes, adding metal rods for stability, and even removing bones prior to casting. In a 2024 analysis of DNA from four male victims discovered in the “House of the Golden Bracelet,” researchers found that none were genetically related, challenging previous narratives and highlighting potential cultural biases in historical interpretations.
