According to technology analyst Gil Luria, government intervention in the beleaguered chipmaker Intel is crucial for safeguarding national security. Luria, who leads technology research at D.A. Davidson, expressed his views during an interview on CNBC's "Squawk Box," underscoring the balance between capitalism and national interests. Recent reports have indicated that the Trump administration is contemplating acquiring a stake in Intel, a move that has already prompted a rise in the company's stock prices. Despite Intel's reluctance to comment on these developments, Luria argues that such intervention could be pivotal in rejuvenating the company and reducing the United States' dependence on foreign manufacturers like Samsung and Taiwan Semiconductor. President Trump has been vocal about the need for increased domestic chip production and advanced technology. However, the specifics of how the administration might execute this intervention remain unclear, with discussions around utilizing funds from the CHIPS Act already underway. Luria emphasized that Intel has consistently missed opportunities to innovate over the years, making a case for government involvement. He suggested that if the government is to provide Intel with a competitive edge, it would also expect a stake in the business. The urgency of this matter was further highlighted by recent comments from notable tech leaders like OpenAI's Sam Altman and Meta's Mark Zuckerberg, who warned that the emergence of superintelligent AI could mirror the risks associated with nuclear proliferation. Luria echoed these sentiments, stating, "We can't rely on somebody else making shell casings for our nuclear arsenal; we have to get it right."
