Ammobia says it has reinvented a century-old technology

Ammobia, a new startup, is shaking up the ammonia production industry, which has relied on the traditional Haber-Bosch process for over a century. This crucial chemical is not only vital for fertilizers but also plays a key role in food security worldwide. Ammobia claims to have made significant modifications to the Haber-Bosch process, potentially reducing production costs by up to 40%. To validate its innovative approach, the company has successfully secured $7.5 million in seed funding from notable investors such as Air Liquide’s venture arm ALIAD, Chevron Technology Ventures, and Shell Ventures, among others. The implications of Ammobia's advancements could extend beyond fertilizer production. With ammonia being explored as a cleaner alternative to hydrogen for decarbonizing various industries, countries like Japan and South Korea are actively developing strategies that incorporate ammonia as a key component. Compared to hydrogen, ammonia is easier to transport and store, offering a significant logistical advantage, according to Ammobia's co-founder and CEO, Karen Baert. However, the production of ammonia has faced criticism due to its environmental impact. The Haber-Bosch process is responsible for nearly 2% of global greenhouse gas emissions, primarily due to its reliance on fossil fuels for heat and hydrogen. Traditional methods operate at extremely high temperatures and pressures, often supplied by burning natural gas. Ammobia's innovative process operates at around 150 degrees Celsius cooler and at ten times lower pressure, which could result in a drastic reduction in pollution, even if fossil fuels remain in use. The startup also highlights that their technology requires less expensive equipment, which could provide a financial edge to those who adopt it. Unlike conventional ammonia producers, who typically have limited options for reducing costs, Ammobia's method is compatible with various sources of hydrogen and heat. The startup's lower pressure operation allows for flexible production adjustments, which opens the door for renewable energy developers to utilize excess electricity for hydrogen production, thus enabling more affordable ammonia manufacturing. The compact nature of Ammobia's technology also sets it apart. While most ammonia plants generate between 1,000 to 3,000 tons daily, Ammobia's commercial unit is designed to produce 250 tons per day, with the potential for scalability through multiple installations. Although specific details on their technological enhancements remain under wraps, Ammobia has a patent pending for a reactor system that utilizes a sorbent to extract ammonia as it forms, thereby optimizing catalyst efficiency. The startup is currently operating a smaller unit and plans to use the new funding to establish a pilot plant featuring the full capabilities of its commercial model, which will produce about 10 tons per day. Baert emphasizes that this modular approach allows for quicker project timelines and meets the increasing demand from customers seeking mid-scale ammonia production solutions, a gap currently unaddressed in the market.
