Health care costs are soaring for Americans—and 2026 is looking grim

As 2026 approaches, Americans are increasingly anxious about the rising costs of health insurance, with predictions indicating a substantial financial burden ahead. The focus has largely been on the soaring prices associated with plans available through the Affordable Care Act (ACA) marketplaces. With critical tax credits set to expire at the end of this year, insurers are proposing an alarming median price hike of 18 percent. This potential increase could result in some individuals seeing their monthly premiums skyrocket, potentially more than doubling in cost. A recent analysis by the nonpartisan health policy organization KFF suggests that, on average, ACA marketplace premiums may surge by an astonishing 114 percent, climbing from $888 in 2025 to $1,904 in 2026. While these prices typically become public in November during the open enrollment period, many states have begun to reveal next year's premium estimates. In Georgia, for example, early previews have shown that some enrollees could face premiums that triple. Natasha Taylor, deputy director of Georgia Watch, a consumer advocacy group, highlighted the dire choices some residents may face, stating, "We have people saying they will have to choose between their monthly premiums and mortgage." The ongoing budget standoff among federal lawmakers has added to the uncertainty surrounding ACA tax credits, which are crucial for many Americans. This impasse has contributed to a government shutdown that ranks as the second-longest in U.S. history. While Democrats push for an extension of these vital credits—backed by nearly 80 percent of the public—Republicans are advocating for separate negotiations following the passage of funding legislation.
