American Express launches NFT passport stamps for US cardholders

American Express has rolled out a novel feature for its U.S. consumer cardholders: NFT passport stamps that celebrate travel experiences in a digital format. These stamps function as ERC-721 tokens on Ethereum's layer-2 Base network, allowing users to create personalized mementos that encapsulate their journeys. Each digital stamp not only indicates the country visited but also includes a brief description, giving travelers the chance to customize their keepsake with highlights such as iconic landmarks, memorable meals, or hotel stays. Luke Gebb, Executive Vice President at Amex Digital Labs, noted, "As physical passport stamps continue to fade away, Amex Passport offers a unique opportunity for card members to celebrate their travels." Importantly, Amex assures that these NFT stamps do not store any personal information, ensuring cardholder privacy remains intact on the blockchain. Furthermore, the stamps are non-transferable, making each one a unique token tied to the specific traveler. Cardholders have the option to share their stamps on social media or keep them stored securely on their devices. Recent data from BaseScan indicates that the smart contract for the Amex travel stamp was launched nearly a month ago. This initiative aligns with findings from a survey where 73% of respondents expressed interest in commemorating their digital travel experiences, while 56% admitted to missing the traditional physical passport stamps. Amex's move to introduce these NFT stamps effectively merges nostalgia with a secure, decentralized method of documenting travel. This launch comes at a time when NFT markets are seeing a resurgence; in August 2025, NFT trading volumes soared to $578 million, reflecting a 40% increase in market capitalization, which reached $9.3 billion. American Express is not alone in exploring the potential of NFTs for customer engagement. Other companies, such as Lufthansa with its Uptrip loyalty program, Mastercard's Artist Accelerator initiative, and Starbucks' now-discontinued Odyssey program, are also leveraging NFTs in innovative ways to enhance user experiences.
