AMD CEO Lisa Su says she won't go the Mark Zuckerberg route of using billion-dollar pay packages to snag AI talent

In a recent interview with Wired, AMD's CEO Lisa Su emphasized her belief that attracting top-tier AI talent hinges more on a compelling mission than on exorbitant salaries. Addressing the strategies employed by tech giants like Meta, led by Mark Zuckerberg, Su made it clear that she does not envision offering billion-dollar compensation packages to lure potential hires. Su acknowledged the intense competition for skilled professionals in the AI sector but asserted that while financial incentives are important, they are not the sole factor that drives talent acquisition. "It's crucial to offer competitive salaries, but it’s even more vital to engage individuals who are passionate about the objectives and vision of the company," she remarked. The race for AI expertise has escalated, with companies such as Meta and Microsoft reportedly offering substantial salaries to secure new employees. The competition has become so fierce that some organizations are proactively reaching out to candidates who have already received offers from competitors. For instance, AI engineer Yangshun Tay in Singapore received an immediate inquiry from Meta after sharing his job offer from OpenAI on LinkedIn. OpenAI's CEO, Sam Altman, recently expressed concerns over Meta's aggressive recruitment tactics, which included offers of signing bonuses reaching $100 million. He remarked that while the strategy may seem attractive, it could undermine the cultural foundation of a company if the emphasis is placed too heavily on financial incentives rather than on meaningful work and mission-driven goals. As the battle for AI talent intensifies, Su's perspective offers a refreshing take, prioritizing a strong mission as the key to building a robust and committed workforce.
