AMD's Su explains what's behind massive forecast change as stock roars 15% on earnings

Lisa Su, the CEO of Advanced Micro Devices (AMD), shared insights with CNBC on Wednesday regarding a significant adjustment to the company's earnings forecast. This revision comes in response to an unprecedented increase in demand for central processing units (CPUs), primarily fueled by the expansion of agentic artificial intelligence. Su expressed her enthusiasm, stating, "Agents are really driving tremendous demand in the overall AI adoption cycle, and we're very excited to be in the middle of it," during an interview on "Squawk on the Street." The company exceeded analyst expectations in its recent quarterly earnings report, achieving a remarkable 38% year-over-year revenue growth. Su attributed this surge largely to the success of AMD's data center business. She emphasized, "The main thing that I can say is that we are seeing a shifting of the workload," indicating that discussions with major clients over the past three months have clarified the demand landscape. As the computing requirements evolve alongside the rise of agentic AI, CPUs are experiencing a renaissance. Although AMD has faced stiff competition from Nvidia in the graphics processing unit sector, it remains a dominant player in the CPU market, crucial for inference tasks. Earlier in November, AMD projected an 18% annual growth in the server CPU market over the next three to five years. However, during the earnings call on Tuesday, Su confidently revised this estimate to forecast an annual growth rate exceeding 35%, predicting the market will surpass $120 billion by the end of the decade. This optimistic outlook has contributed to a 15% surge in AMD's stock, reflecting investor confidence in the company's future prospects and its pivotal role in the evolving AI landscape.
