AMD’s Ryzen 9 9950X3D2 Dual Edition crams 208MB of cache into a single chip

AMD has taken a bold step forward in high-performance desktop processors with the introduction of the Ryzen 9 9950X3D2 Dual Edition. This innovative chip features a staggering 208MB of cache, a remarkable feat achieved by integrating 64MB of 3D V-Cache on both processor dies. For the past four years, AMD has been enhancing its top-tier processors with special X3D variants, which include an additional 64MB of L3 cache—a game-changing upgrade for gaming performance. This unique technology, known as 3D V-Cache, stacks cache directly on the CPU die, either above or below, depending on the processor generation. The Ryzen chips, with their 12- and 16-core configurations, utilize two silicon chiplets, which has led to an unconventional setup in previous models like the 7900X3D and 9950X3D, where only one chiplet housed the extra cache. The Ryzen 9 9950X3D2 Dual Edition eliminates this hybrid design, allowing both chiplets to benefit from the additional cache. This configuration includes 16MB of L2 cache and 64MB of L3 cache per die, coupled with the impressive 64MB of 3D V-Cache on each. AMD claims that this new architecture could enhance performance by as much as 10% in gaming and applications that leverage the extensive cache, marking a significant advancement in computing power for enthusiasts and gamers alike.
