AMD is stepping boldly into the desktop market with its inaugural lineup of Ryzen AI processors, following a successful run of Ryzen AI laptop chips over the past year and a half. These new processors are designed to harness the power of generative AI, featuring advanced neural processing units (NPUs) that enable local execution of language and image-generation models, eliminating the need for server reliance. The newly announced Ryzen AI 400-series CPUs are designed to fit into the AM5 CPU socket and serve as direct successors to the Ryzen 8000G models, rather than the anticipated Ryzen 9000-series. This innovative lineup integrates Zen 5 CPU cores, RDNA 3.5 GPU cores, and an NPU that boasts an impressive capacity of 50 trillion operations per second (TOPS). With these features, they become AMD's first desktop processors eligible for Microsoft's Copilot+ PC label, unlocking exclusive functionalities in Windows 11, such as Recall and Click to Do. Among the six new chips introduced, the Ryzen AI 7 Pro 450G, Ryzen AI 5 Pro 440G, and Ryzen AI 5 Pro 435G stand out, accompanied by lower-power 35 W “GE” variants. Each of these chips carries the “Ryzen Pro” branding, highlighting their suitability for business environments, including essential device management capabilities that IT departments prioritize. Currently, it appears that AMD's Ryzen AI desktop chips will be primarily targeted at business PCs that do not require dedicated graphics cards but still benefit from enhanced graphics performance compared to standard Ryzen desktop offerings. This strategic move indicates AMD's commitment to integrating AI capabilities into everyday computing, setting a new standard for the industry.
