Shares of Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) surged over 12% in a dramatic market reaction following Intel's latest earnings report, which revealed a significant uptick in demand for central processing units (CPUs). This surge in demand is largely attributed to companies ramping up their artificial intelligence capabilities, prompting investors to flock to AMD stock as optimism spreads across the tech sector. Wall Street analysts were taken aback by Intel's performance, which they believe could positively influence other major CPU manufacturers, including AMD. Analyst Gil Luria from D.A. Davidson remarked in a note that the CPU market, once considered stagnant, is now experiencing a renaissance driven by the growing importance of CPUs in the AI landscape. Luria upgraded AMD's rating from neutral to buy, forecasting increased revenue and profit margins for the company in 2026, alongside a new price target of $375—a potential 22% increase from its previous closing price. Intel’s report also included encouraging guidance for the second quarter, which caught the attention of analysts across the board. Citi analyst Atif Malik highlighted that Intel now anticipates double-digit growth in server CPU units for 2026, a notable revision from their earlier projections of modest growth six months prior. This shift has led Malik to also upgrade Intel’s stock rating. The broader market sentiment suggests a positive outlook for CPU manufacturers and data center equipment providers, with AMD positioned as a key player. Analyst Suji Desilva from Roth has raised price targets to reflect enhanced expectations for AI infrastructure growth, aligning Intel's target multiples with those of its competitors in the AI sector, including AMD. However, not all analysts are optimistic. Barclays’ Tom O'Malley raised concerns about Intel potentially losing market share to AMD, suggesting a downside scenario that could see Intel's stock drop to $40 based on projected earnings. As of early Friday, Intel shares were trading near $81, reflecting the ongoing volatility in the tech market driven by AI advancements.
