AMD says that it’s not pulling driver support for older Radeon GPUs afterall

In a recent update, AMD unveiled version 25.10.2 of its Adrenalin driver package for Radeon GPUs, a release that initially appeared standard with typical bug fixes and performance enhancements. However, it also included a statement that sparked controversy: AMD announced it would transition support for the Radeon RX 5000-series and 6000-series GPUs, including RDNA 1 and RDNA 2 architectures, to 'maintenance mode.' This raised concerns among users, particularly those with GPUs launched as recently as 2022, as they feared losing access to updates for new games and optimizations. In response to the backlash, AMD issued several clarifications, asserting that these older GPUs would still receive 'new features, bug fixes, and game optimizations' tailored to market demands. The company later reinforced its commitment by stating that the 25.10.2 driver release would not mark the end of support for RDNA 1 and RDNA 2 architectures. AMD emphasized that both integrated and dedicated GPUs in these categories would continue to receive ongoing game support, stability improvements, and security updates. While AMD acknowledged that these older architectures would now follow a separate driver path, the intention was clear: to ensure that enhancements for the newer RDNA 3 and RDNA 4 GPUs would not inadvertently disrupt functionality for RDNA 1 and RDNA 2 models. AMD explained that this shift allows for a dedicated, stable driver branch for the RX 5000 and RX 6000-series products, built on extensive tuning and optimization. This strategy aims to provide a smoother gaming experience while protecting older GPUs from rapid changes intended for newer models. By maintaining distinct code paths, AMD can accelerate the rollout of new features for RDNA 3 and RDNA 4 without compromising the stability and performance of earlier generations.
