AMD extends Socket AM5 support through at least 2029; AM4 refuses to die

AMD continues to lead the way in processor support, announcing at Computex that it will extend the lifespan of its AM5 socket through at least 2029. This commitment surpasses Intel's typical support durations, allowing users to upgrade their CPUs without needing a new motherboard every time. As part of this announcement, AMD is also reintroducing the Ryzen 7 5800X3D under the banner of a "10th Anniversary Edition". This processor, originally launched in 2022, features AMD's innovative 3D V-Cache technology. While it may not outperform other Ryzen 5000-series CPUs in standard productivity tasks, it excels in gaming scenarios due to its additional 64MB L3 cache. This enhancement is particularly beneficial for gamers using high-end GPUs with AM4 motherboards, as it helps prevent CPU bottlenecks. The 5800X3D is set to hit the market on June 25 with a recommended retail price of $349, which intriguingly is lower than its current secondhand market price. With these developments, AMD is making it clear that both the AM4 and AM5 sockets will remain viable options for PC builders and upgraders in the coming years.
