AMD promises to bring improved, hardware-backed FSR 4 upscaling to older Radeon GPUs

AMD is set to broaden the reach of its FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR) version 4, originally launched with limitations favoring only the latest Radeon RX 9000-series GPUs. Initially, this advanced upscaling technology was exclusive to the newer RDNA4 architecture, leaving older models in the cold. However, in an exciting development, Jack Huynh, AMD's Senior Vice President of Computing and Graphics, has confirmed that a version of FSR 4 will be compatible with older graphics cards. The rollout is scheduled to commence in July and will include RDNA3 and RDNA3.5-based GPUs, such as those in the Radeon RX 7000 series, as well as integrated GPUs like the Radeon 890M and Radeon 8060S. Looking ahead, support for RDNA2 architecture, which encompasses the Radeon RX 6000 series and integrated GPUs like the Radeon 680M, is expected to arrive in early 2027. This expansion could also enable FSR 4 functionality on gaming consoles such as the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S, both of which are equipped with RDNA2-based GPUs. Although Huynh's presentation did not delve into performance specifics, he noted the challenges AMD faced in adapting FSR 4’s advanced upscaling from RDNA4's AI-enhanced hardware to the older INT8 framework utilized by RDNA3 and RDNA2 architectures. This adaptation highlights the company's commitment to enhancing the gaming experience across a broader range of devices.
