AMD takes aim at Nvidia’s AI hardware dominance with Brium acquisition

In a significant move to challenge Nvidia's stronghold in the AI hardware sector, AMD has announced its acquisition of the AI software optimization startup Brium. The financial details of the transaction remain undisclosed. Operating largely under the radar, Brium specializes in developing machine learning applications designed to facilitate AI inference across a multitude of hardware platforms. This capability allows AI models to effectively process new data, regardless of the original hardware they were intended for. AMD emphasized that this acquisition aligns with its vision of creating a high-performance, open AI software ecosystem that supports developers and fosters innovation. The company acknowledges that a substantial portion of AI software currently favors Nvidia's hardware, presenting a considerable challenge. Brium's blog, published in November 2024, highlights the industry's dependency on Nvidia and mentions AMD's efforts to provide viable alternatives. It notes, "While solutions like AMD's Instinct GPUs demonstrate impressive performance, adapting workloads that are typically optimized for Nvidia GPUs remains difficult. Our goal at Brium is to facilitate efficient model inference across diverse hardware architectures." This acquisition marks AMD's fourth strategic investment in two years, aiming to promote an open-source AI environment. Previously, AMD acquired Silo AI in July 2024, Nod.AI in October 2023, and Mipsology in August 2023. TechCrunch has reached out to AMD for further insights on this acquisition.
