Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) and Meta Platforms have announced a significant multi-year collaboration aimed at deploying up to 6 gigawatts of AMD’s artificial intelligence chips. This partnership, revealed on February 24, marks a substantial commitment to AI infrastructure and reflects Meta’s strategy to reduce its dependency on a single chip supplier amidst rising competition in the AI sector. Under this agreement, Meta plans to utilize several generations of AMD’s Instinct graphics processors alongside EPYC central processors. The initial shipments, contributing to the first gigawatt of capacity, are anticipated to commence in the latter half of 2026. These systems will leverage AMD’s Helios rack-scale architecture and feature a custom GPU, specifically designed based on the MI450 architecture, to meet Meta’s unique workload requirements. AMD’s CEO, Lisa Su, expressed enthusiasm about strengthening their strategic partnership with Meta, emphasizing the collaborative effort to push the limits of AI technology at an unprecedented scale. She stated, "This multi-year, multi-generation collaboration aligns our roadmaps to deliver high-performance, energy-efficient infrastructure optimized for Meta’s workloads." Meta’s CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, highlighted the importance of this partnership in facilitating the company’s long-term AI goals, including the creation of more advanced models. He remarked, "We’re excited to form a long-term partnership with AMD to deploy efficient inference compute and deliver personal superintelligence. This is an important step for Meta as we diversify our compute." Additionally, the agreement enhances Meta’s utilization of AMD’s EPYC server processors. Meta will take on a leading role as a customer for the sixth generation of EPYC chips, known as “Venice,” as well as a forthcoming processor named “Verano,” which is designed for specific workloads. Meta has already integrated millions of EPYC processors and a significant number of AMD’s MI300-series accelerators into its global infrastructure. AMD’s Chief Financial Officer, Jean Hu, anticipates that this partnership will significantly enhance the chipmaker’s financial performance over the coming years, predicting substantial revenue growth and an increase in non-GAAP earnings per share. To further solidify this partnership, AMD issued Meta a performance-based warrant for up to 160 million shares of its common stock, with shares vesting as Meta meets deployment milestones, starting with the initial gigawatt of shipments and scaling up to the full 6-gigawatt target.
