Amazon's Zoox to debut robotaxis in Austin, Miami later this year

Amazon's autonomous vehicle division, Zoox, is gearing up to introduce its robotaxi service to select individuals in Austin and Miami later this year, as announced on Tuesday. The company's unique robotaxis, designed without traditional steering wheels or pedals, will begin testing in designated areas of both cities. Initially, rides will be available exclusively to Zoox employees and their friends and family, laying the groundwork for the upcoming Explorer program which will allow the public to join a waitlist for rides. Zoox has gradually opened its driverless service to the public over the past year, having previously provided complimentary rides in Las Vegas and specific neighborhoods in San Francisco. As of late March, the service had catered to approximately 350,000 riders, with around 500,000 individuals on its waitlist. The company, which Amazon acquired in 2020, is working diligently to catch up with Alphabet's Waymo, a leader in the robotaxi sector. Waymo currently facilitates 400,000 paid rides weekly across six major U.S. metropolitan areas and aims to expand its operations to London and Tokyo this year. In addition to its new city launches, Zoox is also broadening its service footprint in San Francisco and Las Vegas. The expansion will increase its coverage in San Francisco fourfold, now reaching neighborhoods such as Marina, North Beach, Chinatown, and Pacific Heights, previously restricted to the SoMa, Mission, and Design districts. In Las Vegas, the company anticipates providing rides to high-demand events at venues like the Sphere and T-Mobile Arena later this spring, along with plans to transport passengers to Harry Reid International Airport soon. Zoox is actively testing its autonomous technology in ten U.S. cities, with plans for its robotaxis to navigate the streets of Atlanta and Los Angeles, according to CEO Aicha Evans. The company aims to deploy 100 robotaxis on public roads as its services grow in Las Vegas and San Francisco, while also initiating tests in Austin and Miami. A significant challenge for Zoox remains the transition to a paid service and scaling production to meet rider demand. The company is currently seeking approval from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to operate up to 2,500 self-driving vehicles commercially on public roads, with a decision expected following a 30-day comment period that began on March 11. "We're ready to charge, especially in Las Vegas, where we've established a presence for some time," Evans stated. Earlier this month, Zoox entered a collaboration with Uber to integrate its robotaxis into the Uber app in Las Vegas starting this summer. As Uber partners with various robotaxi firms to secure its position in the growing autonomous vehicle market, Evans expressed optimism about the insights to be gained from this partnership. However, she noted that the Zoox app will remain the primary method for hailing vehicles in the foreseeable future, without committing to any specific distribution percentages through ride-hailing partners. "This journey is a long one. We've been persistent and consistent for 12 years, and it's not a matter of waking up to find a million robotaxis on the streets overnight," she concluded.
