Amazon's Job cuts continue: Robotics unit now in the crosshairs

Amazon has made the decision to eliminate over 100 positions within its robotics division, marking a continuation of its recent trend of workforce reductions. Earlier this year, the company slashed approximately 16,000 jobs, and now the robotics sector has been impacted as well. In an internal communication shared with employees, Scott Dresser, Vice President of Amazon Robotics, described the layoffs as "difficult but necessary" while emphasizing that the robotics unit remains a crucial part of the company's overall strategy. An Amazon spokesperson reiterated this commitment, stating, "We regularly review our organizations to ensure teams are optimally structured to innovate and serve our customers. These decisions are not made lightly, and we are dedicated to supporting affected employees with severance packages, health insurance, and job placement assistance." The cuts are part of a larger trend at Amazon, which began in October 2025 with the elimination of around 14,000 roles, culminating in a total of roughly 30,000 job losses. The company has attributed these reductions to cost-cutting measures and a shift towards productivity enhancements driven by artificial intelligence. Despite the layoffs, Amazon is channeling significant resources into artificial intelligence, with plans for capital expenditures expected to soar to nearly $200 billion by 2026, a substantial increase from $125 billion in 2025. Investments are primarily directed towards AI infrastructure projects like Project Rainier. Moreover, the company continues to seek talent in AI and machine learning, actively recruiting engineers, cloud architects, and data center specialists.
