Amazon may ramp up robot ops, may replace 600,000 human workers: Reports

Amazon, the American technology powerhouse, has been integrating robotics into its warehouse operations for over ten years. Recent reports suggest that the company is considering a significant increase in its use of automated technology, a move that could impact its human workforce. According to internal documents obtained by The New York Times, Amazon is investigating methods to deploy more robots, potentially displacing up to 600,000 jobs by 2033. While the extent of potential layoffs remains uncertain, the shift towards automation could enable Amazon to meet growing consumer demand without the need for additional human hires. The company is reportedly mindful of the repercussions on communities that may face job losses. To mitigate these effects, Amazon has been rebranding its public image as a socially responsible entity, participating in local events and opting for terminology that downplays the impact of automation. For instance, they prefer to use terms like "advanced technology" and refer to robots as "cobots" to suggest a collaborative approach. In response to the leaked documents, an Amazon spokesperson emphasized that such materials do not fully represent the company's comprehensive hiring strategy. They asserted that the documents reflect only a narrow viewpoint and reiterated Amazon’s commitment to job creation, highlighting that it has generated more jobs in the U.S. over the past decade than any other company. Furthermore, the spokesperson noted that Amazon is actively recruiting, with plans to fill 250,000 positions in time for the holiday season. Currently, Amazon ranks as the third-largest employer in the United States, trailing only the federal government and Walmart, with approximately 1.5 million employees. In contrast, only a handful of companies in the U.S., like FedEx, which has around 550,000 employees, come close to this number. A workforce reduction of the scale mentioned would be akin to erasing FedEx from the employment landscape entirely.
