Ring cameras are about to get increasingly chummy with law enforcement

In a significant move, Amazon has announced that local law enforcement agencies will soon find it easier to access footage from its Ring smart cameras. This partnership, revealed recently, will enable approximately 5,000 local police departments to request video evidence through surveillance technology from Flock Safety. The collaboration has reignited long-standing privacy debates surrounding Ring's surveillance capabilities. Flock’s announcement detailed that law enforcement officers can utilize its software to post specific requests within the Ring Neighbors app, providing details about ongoing investigations and seeking voluntary assistance from users. Each request will need to specify the location and timeframe of the incident, a unique investigation code, and the nature of the inquiry. This process allows users to view requests anonymously. Flock emphasized that any footage shared by Ring users will be securely compiled and sent directly to the requesting local public safety agency via Flock’s operational platforms, FlockOS or Flock Nova. The rollout of this feature is expected in the upcoming months. Flock is also recognized for its license plate recognition technology, allowing users to sift through camera footage using descriptive search terms, such as identifying individuals by clothing. Beyond police departments, Flock's products are utilized by 6,000 communities and 1,000 businesses. However, privacy advocates are voicing concerns over this partnership. Recently, U.S. Senator Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) addressed these issues in a letter to Flock's CEO, highlighting that federal agencies, including ICE’s Homeland Security Investigations, the Secret Service, and the U.S. Navy’s Criminal Investigative Service, have accessed footage from Flock's license plate cameras, raising alarms about surveillance overreach.
