In a surprising turn of events, Amazon.com Inc. inadvertently confirmed a new wave of layoffs when an internal email was sent ahead of schedule to Amazon Web Services (AWS) employees. This early communication, which was attributed to Colleen Aubrey, the senior vice president of applied AI solutions at AWS, was intended for distribution on January 28 but was dispatched a day earlier, as reported by Reuters. The email mistakenly indicated that employees in the United States, Canada, and Costa Rica had already been notified about the layoffs. Sources indicate that Amazon is preparing to eliminate approximately 16,000 corporate positions in the near future. Additionally, an internal Slack message referred to the layoffs as “Project Dawn.” A scheduled meeting for January 28 was subsequently canceled. In a follow-up memo, Aubrey acknowledged the challenges associated with such changes, stating, "These decisions are difficult and are made thoughtfully as we position our organization and AWS for future success." The impending cuts are projected to impact various segments of Amazon's operations, including AWS, retail, Prime Video, and human resources, although the company has not disclosed specific numbers or teams affected. Prior announcements indicated that Amazon could potentially reduce its workforce by about 30,000 roles overall. The initial significant round of layoffs occurred in October 2022 when the company revealed plans to cut 14,000 jobs. Recently, Amazon also laid off employees from its Fresh grocery and Amazon Go divisions, though details on those reductions remain undisclosed. These layoffs coincide with Amazon's increasing reliance on automation and advancements in artificial intelligence, marking a significant shift in its operational strategies.
