In a surprising development, Amazon has announced the introduction of AI-generated product images in its shopping app, intended to enhance user search experiences. This feature aims to assist customers who may have a product in mind but struggle to articulate it effectively, potentially leading to more relevant search results. According to a blog post from the company, when users enter queries, they will be presented with a selection of AI-created images below the autocomplete suggestions. For example, if someone searches for a blue gingham dress, they might encounter various styles, including different sleeve lengths and designs, aimed at guiding them toward more accurate search outcomes. However, this approach has raised concerns about the implications of displaying artificial product images. Critics argue that it could mislead shoppers, as they might expect to find the exact items shown in the images, only to discover they aren’t available. This tactic has prompted questions about the necessity of using AI-generated visuals when Amazon already hosts an extensive library of real product photographs. This new feature follows Amazon’s ongoing efforts to incorporate AI into its retail platform, with varying degrees of success. For instance, the company already utilizes AI to summarize customer reviews, allowing shoppers to grasp key product insights quickly. Last year, Amazon also introduced a feature where AI experts provide audio summaries of products in a style reminiscent of podcasts. Moreover, Amazon has rolled out several other AI functionalities, such as “shoppable collages” that guide users to curated fashion pages, Amazon Lens Live for visual product matching, and a Lock Screen widget for iOS devices. Just this month, the company replaced its Rufus AI chatbot with Alexa for Shopping, enabling users to make queries through voice and text more seamlessly.
