In a surprising twist in the satellite internet race, Amazon is receiving a boost from its biggest competitor, SpaceX. The upcoming launch of 24 Project Kuiper satellites is scheduled for Wednesday, utilizing a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket. This mission, designated KF-01, has a launch window starting at 2:18 AM ET and will take place from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station. This launch will increase the number of Kuiper satellites in orbit to 78, as part of Amazon's ambitious goal to establish a significant presence in the satellite internet sector. The company plans to deploy an impressive fleet of over 3,200 satellites in its initial constellation, aiming to compete directly with SpaceX's Starlink, which currently boasts around 8,000 satellites. Interestingly, this collaboration comes after Amazon secured a three-launch agreement with SpaceX in December 2023, just months after facing a lawsuit from shareholders regarding its initial launch contract decisions. The Federal Communications Commission has mandated that at least half of Kuiper's initial satellites must be operational by July 2026, adding urgency to Amazon's plans. While SpaceX's Falcon 9 is known for its reliability, Amazon also has other launch partners, including United Launch Alliance (ULA), Arianespace, and Blue Origin. However, only ULA currently has a functioning rocket available for satellite launches. ULA has already facilitated the launch of the first two batches of Kuiper satellites, with the first occurring in April. Blue Origin, founded by Jeff Bezos, aims to support Kuiper launches with its New Glenn rocket, although it has only completed one flight to date, which did not achieve booster recovery. The next launch from Blue Origin is slated for August 15.
