Amazon's $8 billion Anthropic investment balloons to $61 billion

Amazon's investment in Anthropic is proving to be a remarkable financial success, at least in terms of valuation. Recently, the tech giant revealed that its stake in the AI startup has ballooned to an impressive $60.6 billion. This figure comprises $45.8 billion in convertible notes and $14.8 billion in nonvoting preferred stock, reflecting a staggering seven-fold increase from the initial $8 billion investment made since late 2023. The partnership between Amazon and Anthropic has solidified further, with Anthropic committing to purchase 1 million of Amazon's Trainium chips. This significant agreement closely ties one of the premier AI research labs to Amazon Web Services, enhancing their commercial relationship. In September, Anthropic successfully raised $13 billion, achieving a post-money valuation of $183 billion. This followed a $3.5 billion funding round in March that valued the company at $61.5 billion. Now, Anthropic is reportedly in discussions for another funding round that could elevate its valuation to a staggering $350 billion. Amazon's convertible notes are designed to convert to preferred stock as Anthropic secures more funding. Consequently, with each new funding round, Amazon stands to gain additional valuable equity in one of the most promising AI firms worldwide. The financial benefits of this arrangement have already begun to reflect in Amazon's earnings. In 2025, conversions generated approximately $5.6 billion in recognized gains, while the company's third-quarter results showed a $7.2 billion upward adjustment in 'other income' due to Anthropic's rising valuation. An Amazon spokesperson indicated that the value of its Anthropic stake increased from $38.5 billion in the third quarter to $60.6 billion by the fourth quarter. Looking ahead, Amazon anticipates an additional $15 billion gain in first-quarter 'other income' as some notes transition to nonvoting preferred stock. However, it's important to note that these valuations are based on what Amazon describes as 'significant judgment.' The company classifies these convertible notes as 'Level 3' assets, meaning their values rely on unobservable inputs and internal assumptions rather than market prices. This is typically the case for startups, which do not have actively traded securities. As Anthropic gears up for a potential IPO, the financial landscape surrounding this AI powerhouse is set to become even more intriguing.
