Amazon VP says his division is hiring and promoting based on employees' AI usage

In a bold move to integrate artificial intelligence into its workforce, Amazon's Vice President of Product for Home Security, Jamie Siminoff, has announced that AI usage will be a critical factor in employee promotions. During an interview with Business Insider, Siminoff emphasized that all promotion applications within his division will require candidates to detail how they leverage AI in their roles. Siminoff's commitment to fostering AI integration doesn't stop at promotions. He stated, "We're going to promote based on how you're integrating AI into your job," underscoring the importance of this technology in enhancing productivity. He believes that the promotion process serves as a significant incentive for employees, linking their financial rewards directly to their ability to create leverage for the company through AI. The announcement comes at a time when Amazon is navigating a challenging landscape, having recently laid off 14,000 employees. While CEO Andy Jassy noted that the layoffs were not primarily financially or AI-driven but rather a reflection of company culture, Siminoff remains focused on the future. He clarified that the new promotion criteria apply specifically to the RBKS division, which includes brands like Ring and Blink. Siminoff, who co-founded Ring before its acquisition by Amazon in 2018, is now steering the company towards enhancing crime-fighting capabilities and incorporating more AI features. He has also begun to prioritize AI-related inquiries during the hiring process, seeking candidates who are already proficient with AI tools like ChatGPT or Gemini. "The ideal candidate thinks about AI natively," he said, aiming to build a team that is inherently inclined to innovate with AI technology.
