Amazon has refreshed its Echo lineup with two new devices: the Alexa Echo Dot Max and the Alexa Echo Show, each boasting significant upgrades in audio quality, design, and smart home integration. We had the chance to put the Echo Dot Max through its paces, and it’s being touted as the most advanced speaker in the current Echo family. With a price tag of ₹10,999, this device features a sleek 3D knit fabric design paired with a new control layout, Automatic Room Adaptation, and Dolby Atmos-enhanced spatial audio. These enhancements aim to provide users with a richer and more immersive sound experience at home. After a week of testing, it’s clear that the Echo Dot Max represents a notable advancement over its predecessors. In terms of design, the Echo Dot Max sports a spherical shape that retains a compact form—measuring 10.9 cm in width and 9.9 cm in height, with a weight of just 505.3 grams. It’s available in three colors: Graphite, Amethyst, and Glacier White. While the darker shades are classic, the Amethyst option stands out as a stylish addition to any modern decor. The control panel has moved from the top to the front, featuring a circular layout for easy access to volume and mute controls. However, it requires a firm press, which may take a little getting used to. The device also allows for tap gestures to manage music playback and notifications. One of the standout features of the Echo Dot Max is its enhanced sound quality. The speaker system includes a 0.8-inch tweeter for high frequencies and a 2.5-inch woofer for deep bass, resulting in well-rounded audio that fills a room. A unique room adaptation feature analyzes acoustics and adjusts sound output accordingly, while the Alexa app provides customizable EQ settings for personal preferences. Additionally, voice recognition capabilities have been improved, allowing for quick responses to commands even when the music is playing loudly or from various positions in the room. The Echo Dot Max also supports home theater mode with compatible Fire TV Sticks, although we were unable to test this function. Its core functionalities remain largely unchanged from earlier models, enabling users to manage tasks such as checking the weather, setting reminders, controlling smart home devices, and streaming music. However, it lacks the upgraded AI capabilities of the Alexa+ feature, which is not available in India yet. In conclusion, the Amazon Alexa Echo Dot Max introduces significant enhancements in audio performance, voice recognition, and smart home features, making it a compelling choice for new users. However, those familiar with previous Echo devices may find it retains much of the same overall experience. At ₹10,999, it occupies a premium price range, and while it excels in sound quality and everyday convenience, the absence of Alexa+ may leave some users wanting more.
