Amazon's Prime Air delivery service is under scrutiny following a collision involving two of its drones and a crane in Tolleson, Arizona. The incident, which took place around 1 p.m. EST on Wednesday, has led the company to temporarily suspend drone operations in the vicinity. The drones, identified as MK30 models, collided with the boom of a stationary construction crane located in a commercial area not far from an Amazon warehouse. Fortunately, there were no reported injuries from the crash, but both drones suffered significant damage during the mishap, as indicated by preliminary reports from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). In a statement regarding the incident, Amazon spokesperson Terrence Clark confirmed their awareness of the situation and emphasized the company's commitment to cooperating with the FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) as investigations unfold. The NTSB has yet to issue a comment regarding its inquiry into the matter. This incident comes on the heels of prior disruptions to Amazon's drone delivery services. Earlier this year, the company paused operations in Tolleson and College Station, Texas, after two crashes at its Pendleton, Oregon, test site, which similarly attracted the attention of federal regulators. After addressing software issues, Amazon resumed deliveries in March. For over ten years, Amazon has been striving to realize founder Jeff Bezos' vision of utilizing drones for rapid deliveries of everyday items. However, progress has been methodical, with Prime Air services currently available in only a limited number of U.S. cities. The company is aiming to achieve a milestone of delivering 500 million packages annually via drone by the end of the decade. Local authorities in Tolleson have not yet responded to inquiries regarding the recent collision.
