Amazon cloud records 20% sales growth, topping estimates

Amazon announced on Thursday that its cloud computing segment saw a remarkable 20% increase in revenue during the third quarter, surpassing analysts' predictions. The revenue for Amazon Web Services (AWS) hit $33 billion, exceeding the estimated $32.42 billion and reflecting a growth rate of 18.1% compared to the previous year. Operating income for the quarter also saw a positive trend, rising by 9% year-over-year to reach $11.4 billion. This figure not only outperformed forecasts but also represented approximately two-thirds of Amazon's overall operating profit. Despite AWS's leading position as the world's largest cloud infrastructure provider, it is facing heightened competition from rivals like Google and Microsoft. Both companies have released their quarterly results this week, with Google reporting a 34% increase in cloud revenue and Microsoft Azure achieving a 40% growth. This financial report follows a significant challenge for AWS, which experienced a prolonged outage lasting over 15 hours, disrupting numerous websites just a week prior. Microsoft also faced issues with its Azure cloud and 365 services, experiencing outages just hours before announcing its earnings. In a strategic move, Amazon launched its $11 billion AI data center, known as Project Rainier, on Wednesday. This facility, first unveiled last year, aims to support the training and operation of models developed by Anthropic, the creator of Claude. Amazon has invested $8 billion in Anthropic, which plans to utilize one million of Amazon's custom Trainium2 chips by the end of 2025. The establishment of this new data center is crucial for Amazon as it seeks to enhance its position in the competitive landscape of cloud services, especially in light of the lucrative opportunities in artificial intelligence. Recently, Anthropic and Google expanded their cloud partnership in a multi-billion dollar deal, while Meta has also secured significant cloud contracts with Google and Oracle in recent months.
