Amazon is laying off 16,000 employees as AI battle intensifies

In a significant shakeup, Amazon has announced the layoff of 16,000 employees, marking the company's second major workforce reduction in just three months. This decision comes as Amazon seeks to enhance its position in the fiercely competitive AI landscape. In a blog post released on Wednesday, Beth Galetti, Amazon's senior vice president of people, emphasized the need to streamline operations and expedite decision-making processes. "We’ve been working to strengthen our organization by reducing layers, increasing ownership, and removing bureaucracy," she stated. This latest announcement follows a previous cut of 14,000 corporate roles in late October, a move aligned with CEO Andy Jassy's vision of transforming Amazon into a more agile entity akin to the world’s largest startup. Jassy aims for the company to adapt swiftly in a technology sector increasingly influenced by AI advancements. While Galetti reassured that these layoffs won't establish a new trend, she acknowledged Jassy's outlook of potential ongoing reductions in headcount due to AI factors. She noted that Amazon is continually assessing its organizational structure, focusing on ownership, speed, and capacity for innovation to better serve its customers. Despite the cuts, Galetti mentioned that Amazon is committed to hiring in key strategic areas that are vital for the company's future growth. This story is still unfolding and will be updated as more information becomes available.
