Amazon could invest up to $50 billion in OpenAI in coming weeks, source says

Amazon is reportedly negotiating a monumental investment of up to $50 billion in OpenAI, signaling a powerful endorsement from the retail behemoth. This update, confirmed by CNBC, highlights the depth of discussions between Amazon’s CEO Andy Jassy and OpenAI's Sam Altman, as revealed by an anonymous source familiar with the negotiations. This potential investment comes on the heels of Amazon's significant financial commitments to OpenAI's rival, Anthropic, totaling billions since 2023. While the specifics of the investment talks are still evolving, the source indicated that a term sheet could be executed in the upcoming weeks. Despite the excitement, an Amazon representative has opted not to comment on the situation. The Wall Street Journal was the first to disclose the ambitious $50 billion figure. Since its inception as a nonprofit research lab in 2015, OpenAI has skyrocketed in prominence, particularly after the launch of its generative chatbot, ChatGPT, in 2022. As a result, OpenAI's market valuation surged to an impressive $500 billion by October following a successful secondary share sale. Discussions between Amazon and OpenAI have been underway since last year, with the prospective deal possibly including provisions for the use of Amazon's AI chips. Furthermore, OpenAI is exploring additional fundraising opportunities with various investors, with estimates suggesting that the total funding round could reach approximately $100 billion. Last week, Altman was in the United Arab Emirates engaging with sovereign wealth funds as part of these investment dialogues. This situation is rapidly developing, and updates are anticipated soon.
