Andy Jassy says Amazon’s Nvidia competitor chip is already a multibillion-dollar business

In a bold statement at the recent AWS re:Invent conference, Amazon CEO Andy Jassy highlighted the company's ambitious endeavors in the AI chip market, particularly with its latest offering, the Trainium3. This next-generation chip is touted to be four times faster while consuming less power than its predecessor, Trainium2. Jassy shared impressive statistics about Trainium2, emphasizing its significant market presence. He revealed that the chip is already a multi-billion-dollar venture, with over one million units produced and more than 100,000 companies leveraging its capabilities, primarily through Amazon's AI app development tool, Bedrock. The CEO attributed Trainium's success to its competitive price-performance ratio compared to other GPUs in the market, suggesting that Amazon's strategy of developing in-house technology at a lower cost is paying off. AWS CEO Matt Garman further elaborated on the partnership with Anthropic, a key player contributing to Trainium's revenue. He noted that over 500,000 Trainium2 chips are currently aiding Anthropic in developing advanced models for its Claude project, facilitated by Amazon's ambitious Project Rainier. Despite being a significant investor in Anthropic, Amazon faces competition from other tech giants like Microsoft, which also utilizes Nvidia chips. However, Jassy pointed out that only a select few companies, including Amazon, possess the necessary expertise in chip design and networking technology to challenge Nvidia's dominance. The road ahead remains uncertain, particularly as Amazon plans the release of Trainium4, designed to work alongside Nvidia's GPUs. Whether this innovation will allow Amazon to capture more market share or merely complement Nvidia's existing dominance is yet to be determined. Nevertheless, with Trainium2 already generating substantial revenue, Amazon appears well-positioned for continued growth in the AI chip landscape.
