Amazon’s DNS problem knocked out half the web, likely costing billions

On Monday afternoon, Amazon announced the resolution of a significant outage affecting its Amazon Web Services (AWS), which had widespread repercussions across the internet. This incident is reported to be the most severe disruption since last year’s CrowdStrike incident, leading to what has been described as "global turmoil" by various news outlets. As the largest cloud service provider globally, AWS serves as the backbone for a substantial portion of the internet. The outage impacted over 28 of its services, leading analysts to estimate potential losses in the billions, according to CNN. High-traffic applications such as Snapchat, Signal, and Reddit experienced downtime, while flight schedules were disrupted, and numerous banking and financial services went offline. Major games like Fortnite also became inaccessible, frustrating millions of players. In addition to affecting external services, Amazon’s own platforms were not spared. Its e-commerce site, Alexa, and Prime Video were among the services that faced interruptions. The outage rendered countless businesses unable to operate effectively, preventing employees from accessing systems and processing transactions. Mehdi Daoudi, the CEO of Catchpoint, an internet performance monitoring company, emphasized the incident's implications by stating, "This highlights the complexity and fragility of the internet and how integral it is to our daily operations." He projected that the financial ramifications of this event could soar into the hundreds of billions, attributable to lost productivity and halted business operations across various sectors from airlines to manufacturing. The root cause of the outage was traced back to one of Amazon's oldest and largest data centers in the U.S., which is frequently the default region for many AWS services. This site has faced similar outages in the past, in 2020 and 2021, although Amazon had assured that those issues were resolved. Unfortunately, it appears that the measures taken did not secure the site’s stability for the foreseeable future.
