Amazon introduces AI agent to help sellers with tedious tasks

In a groundbreaking announcement, Amazon revealed on Wednesday the launch of an advanced artificial intelligence assistant designed to support third-party sellers in managing their online businesses more efficiently. This innovative feature is being integrated into the existing Seller Assistant tool, granting it the ability to take proactive actions on behalf of merchants after obtaining their consent. The update was unveiled at Amazon's annual Accelerate conference held in Seattle, where the company emphasized that tools like Seller Assistant enable merchants to dedicate more time to enhancing product innovation and nurturing customer relationships. Meanwhile, the generative AI technology simplifies handling monotonous operational tasks. Amazon has already rolled out a variety of AI tools for third-party sellers, who represent over half of the total goods sold on the platform. Among these tools are a product listing generator and visual content creators for advertisements. Dharmesh Mehta, Amazon's vice president of worldwide selling partner services, shared in a recent interview with CNBC that approximately 1.3 million third-party sellers have benefited from these generative AI listing tools, which can generate around 70% of the content needed for product listings on the website. "This essentially provides sellers with a team of specialists at their disposal," Mehta explained. "These experts cover aspects such as listing optimization, pricing strategies, promotions, and supply chain management. Many small businesses either struggle to learn these skills, hire experts, or settle for mediocre results, which is far from ideal." The enhanced Seller Assistant not only responds to inquiries but also manages inventory orders, develops business growth strategies, and resolves account-related issues, potentially helping sellers evade costly suspensions. Amazon anticipates further enhancements to the assistant's capabilities based on user feedback in the future. The evolution of generative AI has led to the emergence of agentic AI tools capable of executing complex tasks with minimal user oversight. In addition to its marketplace innovations, Amazon's AI lab in San Francisco recently showcased a browser-based agent that can perform actions autonomously. Seller Assistant is powered by Bedrock, a software solution that facilitates access to large language models from Amazon as well as from other tech giants like Anthropic and OpenAI. Notably, there are currently no plans to impose charges on merchants for using the Seller Assistant, as sellers typically pay Amazon for fulfillment services and account management, which has become a significant revenue stream, generating $40.3 billion in the second quarter alone. Last September, Amazon initially introduced this AI assistant for sellers, then known as Project Amelia, allowing merchants to troubleshoot account issues, receive inventory planning advice, and brainstorm listing titles, among other functionalities.
