On Tuesday, Amazon introduced an exciting new feature that leverages artificial intelligence to transform how customers interact with product pages. This AI-driven tool allows users to pose questions about items and receive real-time audio responses that mimic a conversational style. Dubbed “Join the chat,” this feature is designed to streamline the shopping process, giving customers quick access to essential product information without the need to sift through extensive descriptions or reviews. The AI system synthesizes data from various sources, including product specifications and customer feedback, to provide tailored answers. For instance, shoppers can inquire whether a specific coffee maker is beginner-friendly or if a sweater has an itchy texture based on user reviews. Rather than offering generic replies, Amazon's AI adapts previous responses to create a more personalized interaction, enhancing the relevance of the information provided. This approach aims to replicate the experience of conversing with a knowledgeable store associate. According to Amazon’s blog, “Customers can ask questions and actually steer where the conversation goes. Every question they ask influences what comes next, making the experience a conversation customers can join and customize.” The “Join the chat” feature is part of a larger initiative called “Hear the highlights,” which offers concise audio summaries for millions of products within the Amazon Shopping app. This feature, which began testing last May, is currently available in the U.S. but applies to select products only. To utilize it, customers simply access a product page in the app and tap the “Hear the highlights” button located beneath the product image. They can then listen to a quick overview or select the “Join the chat” icon to ask specific questions via text or voice—while the audio continues to play as they browse. This latest addition is a continuation of Amazon’s strategy to enhance its AI-powered shopping tools. Other innovations include Rufus, a generative AI assistant that aids customers in product research and comparisons, Interests, which identifies and showcases new items based on user preferences, and “Help me decide,” which recommends products tailored to individual shopping histories and behaviors.
