Amazon launches its healthcare AI assistant on its website and app

On Tuesday, Amazon revealed that it is broadening the availability of its healthcare AI assistant, now accessible on both its website and app. This assistant, named Health AI, was initially exclusive to the app of One Medical, a healthcare organization that Amazon purchased for $3.9 billion in 2023. Health AI is equipped to handle a variety of tasks, including answering health-related inquiries, interpreting health records, managing prescription refills, and scheduling appointments. Notably, users do not need to be members of One Medical or Amazon Prime to utilize this innovative assistant. According to Amazon, while Health AI can respond to general health questions without needing personal medical data, it is designed to offer personalized assistance. This includes connecting users with healthcare professionals and recommending treatments tailored to individual needs. However, it is crucial to note that sharing health information with an AI presents certain risks. Experts have raised concerns about companies potentially using user interactions for training purposes. Amazon reassured users that it trains Health AI models using abstract patterns, ensuring that personal identifiers remain confidential. For instance, if multiple users inquire about medication interactions, Amazon can enhance Health AI's responses based on these patterns, all while keeping identities secure. All interactions occur within a HIPAA-compliant framework, with robust encryption and stringent access controls in place, although specific details about the encryption process have not been disclosed. If users opt to share their health information with Health AI, this is facilitated through the Health Information Exchange, a secure national network for sharing patient data. This allows Health AI to analyze lab results, diagnoses, and medical records, providing informed and personalized responses regarding symptoms and medications. Should professional medical care be necessary, Health AI can link users to a One Medical provider. For U.S. Prime members, using Health AI entitles them to up to five complimentary direct-message consultations with a One Medical provider for a variety of over 30 common conditions, such as flu, allergies, and skin care. Non-Prime members can still connect with providers through a pay-per-visit system. Users can opt-in for Health AI via the Amazon Health page and will be notified via email when they gain access. Once on board, users are required to create or log into their personal Amazon Health profile to start engaging with Health AI by typing their health-related questions directly on Amazon.com or within the app. Queries might include asking for explanations of recent cholesterol results or seeking advice for symptoms like congestion and sore throat. Amazon's rollout of Health AI comes in the wake of a growing trend, as various AI platforms increasingly enter the healthcare sector. Earlier this year, OpenAI launched ChatGPT Health, tailored for health inquiries, followed by Anthropic's introduction of Claude for Healthcare just a week later.
