Amazon is gearing up for its annual Prime Day, scheduled to take place over four days from June 23 to June 26, continuing the trend established last year. Since its inception in 2015, Prime Day has aimed to create a mid-year shopping extravaganza, intended to attract new subscribers to its $139 annual membership while also spotlighting its range of products and services. Jamil Ghani, Amazon's vice president of Prime, shared that the decision to extend the event was influenced by last year’s shopper behavior, where Prime members frequently browsed and made purchases throughout the entire four-day period. To further entice customers, Amazon plans to roll out limited-time offers and fresh discounts each day, encouraging participation across multiple days. However, the company is facing challenges due to a tough economic climate, marked by a significant drop in U.S. consumer sentiment in May, as reported by the University of Michigan. Factors such as rising oil prices and geopolitical tensions have contributed to this decline, with many consumers, particularly those with lower incomes, expressing concerns about soaring prices impacting their finances. This year, Amazon intends to emphasize essential items within its promotions, with discounts on groceries and household necessities taking center stage. Shoppers can expect prices as low as $1 for items like fresh produce, hot dog buns, and various meats, while personal care products such as soap may be offered at half price. In light of economic uncertainties, consumers have shifted their purchasing habits, opting for practical items like trash bags and dishwasher pods during Prime Day, along with traditional favorites like Instant Pots and Echo devices. Ghani remarked, "We are aware of the economic challenges and understand that everyone is looking to maximize their spending power across currencies."
