Amazon is ramping up its efforts to enhance the Kindle Scribe tablet, announcing the device's third hardware update in just four years. This time, the lineup expands to include a new entry-level version of the Scribe, which lacks a front light and has reduced storage, alongside the upgraded Kindle Scribe Colorsoft that features a vibrant color e-ink screen. With the addition of the Colorsoft, this marks only the second instance of a Kindle incorporating color technology, following last year’s Kindle Colorsoft release. Customers can now place orders for the regular Kindle Scribe priced at $500 and the Colorsoft version at $630, both of which come equipped with a Premium Pen accessory and 32GB of internal storage. For an additional $50, buyers can opt for a 64GB storage option on either model. In a departure from its more premium counterparts, the lower-end Scribe is set to launch next year, retailing at $430 for a 16GB model. While these prices reflect a significant increase from the original Scribe's launch price of $340, various economic factors such as inflation, tariffs, and supply shortages have contributed to the rising costs of tech products. Both the Kindle Scribe and Scribe Colorsoft feature an upgraded front light, utilizing miniaturized LEDs that enhance the display's lighting uniformity while narrowing the bezel. Furthermore, improvements have been made to the paper-like texture of the glass display, reducing the gap between the glass and the display panel to create a more authentic writing experience. Speed enhancements include the introduction of a quad-core processor and increased RAM, making for a more responsive tablet overall.
