Amazon launches a grocery brand with most products under $5

On Wednesday, Amazon introduced its latest private-label initiative, Amazon Grocery, designed to cater to budget-conscious consumers. This new brand features a diverse range of grocery products, with most items priced below $5, making it an attractive option for shoppers looking to save. The selection includes essentials such as milk, olive oil, fresh produce, various meats, and seafood. Amazon Grocery consolidates offerings from the existing Amazon Fresh and Happy Belly lines into a single comprehensive collection. According to Jason Buechel, Vice President of Amazon Worldwide Grocery Stores and CEO of Whole Foods Market, the initiative aims to provide quality grocery items across all categories without compromising on taste. "During a time when consumers are particularly price-conscious, Amazon Grocery delivers more than 1,000 quality grocery items at competitive prices to help customers maximize their grocery budget," he stated in a press release. This new brand will compete directly with other retailers' private label products, such as Walmart’s Great Value and Target’s Favorite Day. Amazon's lineup includes innovative items like fresh bakery cinnamon rolls, refrigerated pizza dough, and bottled spring water, with plans to introduce new items like frozen pasta meals, pie fillings, granola, and sliced cakes in the upcoming months. This is not Amazon's first venture into affordable grocery options; last year, the company launched the “Amazon Saver” brand, focusing on budget-friendly staples like canned goods and condiments. The demand for Amazon’s private-label products has been growing, with customers purchasing 15% more private-brand items in 2024 compared to the previous year across Amazon.com, Whole Foods Market, and Amazon Fresh. Additionally, Amazon recently expanded its Same-Day Delivery service to 1,000 cities across the U.S., allowing customers to order perishable items such as produce, dairy, and baked goods alongside everyday household products and electronics, further enhancing the convenience of shopping with Amazon.
