Amazon launches 'price-conscious' grocery brand with most products under $5

Amazon has introduced a new grocery brand designed specifically for budget-conscious consumers, launching on Wednesday with an impressive selection of over 1,000 products, all priced under $5. This initiative, branded as Amazon Grocery, encompasses a wide range of items, including dairy, fresh produce, meats, seafood, snacks, and baking essentials. The launch merges Amazon's existing Happy Belly and Amazon Fresh brands into a single, cohesive label. Jason Buechel, Amazon's vice president of worldwide grocery, emphasized the importance of affordability during these challenging times for consumers. He stated, "Amazon Grocery delivers more than 1,000 quality grocery items across all categories that don't compromise on quality or taste, from fresh food items to crave-worthy snacks and pantry essentials—all at low, competitive prices that help customers stretch their grocery budgets further." This is not Amazon's first venture into budget grocery offerings. Last September, the company rolled out Amazon Saver, which also emphasized value. The new brand is launched amidst ongoing changes within Amazon's grocery division, which has seen fluctuations in its operations. Recently, the company has streamlined its cashierless Go convenience stores and announced the closure of all its Fresh supermarket locations in the U.K. Despite these changes, executives, including CEO Andy Jassy, have noted the growing success of everyday essentials in Amazon's online grocery market, which includes items like canned goods, paper towels, and snacks. Moreover, just last month, Amazon expanded its same-day delivery service for fresh foods across more regions in the U.S., aiming to encourage customers to add items like meat and eggs to their online shopping carts.
